5 tips to take care of your pet in summer
In order to guarantee the well-being of dogs and cats, it is essential that in the hot months we pay them much more attention and offer them what is necessary to avoid heat stroke highly-regarded family pets. To do this, follow these recommendations.
1. Avoid poorly ventilated places
Leaving our furry friends in the car, even for just a minute, can pose a risk to their health. It is also not good for them to stay locked in a room or in an environment where the air does not flow. They do not sweat like we do to regulate temperature nor can they provide themselves with water to drink.
2. Be careful with the sun
For nothing in the world should we leave our pets tied in a place that does not have shade, since in the hottest hours of the day they would not only become dehydrated, but could suffer wounds and sunburn.
The snout, in dogs, the ears, in cats, and the belly, in both species, are extremely sensitive.
Sunscreen for dogs and cats
Applying a specific sunscreen, not human ones, as it contains ingredients that are toxic to animals, on the most exposed parts, is a good idea to protect your skin from dangerous UVA and UVB radiation.
3. Give them plenty of water
It doesn't matter that our little friends don't drink it at all. Add an additional container next to the one they usually use. Drinking water is a very important measure to counteract the heat. It is essential that the liquid is always clean and fresh. Change it every day to prevent mosquitoes and other bugs from proliferating.
4. To the bathroom!
A good bath can help our pets deal with high temperatures. However, a fountain in a park – where access is allowed – can also be a perfect place for this. The good thing is that they will dry very quickly and, when they get home, they won't stain anything.
We recommend that you use a top quality shampoo, adapted to the pH of your skin.
5. Be careful with their paws
Try to avoid walks during the hottest hours. Concrete, sand, stones and other surfaces get very hot in summer. We don't realize it because we wear shoes, but dogs' limbs are very exposed and can get burned and suffer painful sores. Hot asphalt on the road can also burn their pads.
