Is it worth buying Uher speakers in 2026? (14 อ่าน)

Hi everyone! I have been thinking about upgrading my audio system and came across some vintage speakers from the German brand Uher. It is a legendary brand - their Report Monitor series reel-to-reel recorders are still considered the gold standard for portable recording - but there is not much information out there about their speaker systems. I decided to look into it and found a general database of manuals for all their equipment to understand what components they used in their speakers. I am interested in hearing from those who have actually listened to their Special or HiFi series bookshelf or floorstanding speakers. The manuals list fairly standard specifications for that era, but we know that dry numbers do not convey the character of the sound.

To what extent did their monitor-oriented approach in tape recorders carry over to the speakers? Do they deliver that signature German detail and honest midrange, or is the sound more colored and soft? Another important point is the suspension. Naturally, the user manual says nothing about wear and tear after 40 years. Anyone who is dealt with this - is it just paper on a rubber band, or is it actually foam that turns to dust over time?

Just so you know, my uncle still has a Uher stereo system that is almost 20 years old. He replaced just a few minor parts, like the speaker grilles, and the sound is still excellent, oddly enough. This weekend, we are going to give it a full service using the user manual for Uher from ManualMachine, at my suggestion. I still think that the device working properly for so many years without a thorough check is just plain luck, and I want to rely on what I see in front of me to understand exactly what can be improved, tweaked, soldered, and all that. You know, we do not want a short circuit either, and it is a shame to waste the wiring. As far as I am concerned, the rule of do not touch it as long as it works is long outdated - what do you think?
