Is the Difference Between Traditional and Self Publishing Smaller Than It Used to Be? (12 อ่าน)

I have been researching the difference between traditional and self publishing, and it seems like the gap between the two models has narrowed significantly over the past few years. Historically, traditional publishing was viewed as the primary path to credibility and distribution, while self-publishing was often associated with limited reach. Today, that distinction appears much less clear.
One reason is that modern self-publishing platforms now provide access to global distribution, print-on-demand services, audiobook production, and advanced sales analytics. At the same time, traditional publishing still offers advantages such as established industry relationships, professional editorial support, and broader access to physical retail channels.
Whats interesting is how authors are starting to evaluate both options using performance-based metrics rather than reputation alone. Similar to SaaS decision-making, writers often compare speed to market, royalty structures, audience ownership, marketing flexibility, and long-term revenue potential. In some cases, self-published authors can launch books in weeks, while traditional publishing timelines may extend for months or longer.
Another factor worth discussing is control. Self-publishing generally allows authors to test pricing strategies, book descriptions, cover designs, and promotional campaigns more freely. Some writers even experiment with different positioning approaches to improve reader engagement and conversion rates. Traditional publishing typically provides less flexibility but may offer stronger support systems throughout the publishing process.
From a discoverability standpoint, both models face challenges. Regardless of publishing route, success often depends on visibility, audience building, and content quality. Readers tend to focus more on value and credibility than on how a book was published.
For authors evaluating the difference between traditional and self publishing today, what factor carries the most weight in your decision-making process: creative control, speed, distribution reach, royalty potential, or long-term audience growth?
