We all loved having our faces painted as children and things have not changed in today's world either. Children are in fact more demanding today. They request lots of different designs and characters according to how far their little imaginations will carry them and with TV and the Internet, these imaginations are going a long, long way. Here's a top 10 list of face painting techniques that you should follow in order to achieve true success every time with your face painting moments. Get reading!

Tip 1: Take Care of Your Paints

Cost is a difficult factor with professional face painting because your materials can cost a lot, even more so when you're painting a whole party's worth of beaming children's faces. Keep your expensive materials safe and out of the reach of children during a party therefore. They will get taken and destroyed and you will not make a living from what you are doing. Test the paints to find the best for you... do you like block or tube paints best, for example?

Tip 2: Sponge it! Don't brush it!

Sponges are better than brushes from large areas. They are quicker and a different sponge for every colour eliminates the need to wash them during a painting session. Large parties can get demanding. Be kind to yourself and avoid insanity by being organized and clever. Lastly, children have delicate faces and sponges are kinder to the skin.

Tip 3: Don't Rush and Water-Down your Paints

The main rule is that the first face paint should dry before you begin to use the second. If you don't, the colours will mix and wiping everything off and starting again is a huge possibility. Remember that thick layers of paint tend to crack on faces so make your layers thin, let them dry and then apply another.

Tip 4: Design Before You Paint

Know what you're going to paint before you begin to paint. Free hand is not a good idea. Children are not patient and they won't sit still why you think about your next colour choice. You need basic face ideas in mind. Then, if you still get the urge to add those special touches to your creation once you've finished, you can do so quickly if you want to.

Tip 5: Wow Factor!

The paint you're using ca be just like glue. To create bumpy noses or big eyebrows, soak a bit of cotton wool in the paint, place it on the face, cover it over with a piece of tissue, and then begin to paint. Rice Krispies or corn flakes make excellent witchy warts and the kids love to be creative with simple things the most! Ghostly effects can be achieved with a sprinkling of flour as a final measure. Safety comes first. The kids must have their eyes shut.

Tip 6: Stencils

If you're not confident painting freehand, or are short of time, why not use a stencils? Stars, hearts and flowers can all be drawn onto a cheek with ease. All you need is a few sizes to choose from to allow for children with small and larger faces.

Tip 7: Temporary Tattoos

Have you considered temporary tattoos? Be careful about bad skin reactions and advise on the fact that they are difficult to remove. Always do some quick testing on a patch of skin first. Glitter is great for fast, powerful effects, but it goes all over the place and is very hard to clean up, so keep your face painting area tidy and organized.

Tip 8: Plan Ahead

What does the next child want painted on their face? Start asking before you have finished the previous face. This way the children have a little time to decide and save wasted painting time. You may suggest a few faces, to try to limit the choice to one you're confident with. Create a chart of designs for kids to choose from; it makes it much easier for the children to decide. Think about basic and easy designs such as hearts or balloons. Children love to choose the simple stuff.

Tip 9: Mirrors!

Remember to take a mirror so your face painting patients can see the results. Also bring a high stool for kids to sit on; bending over is going to make pains in your back.

Tip 10: Tissues Galore

You'll probably use more tissues or wipes than you think for hands, brushes and faces, for example. Face painting can be a disastrous mess, but it's very cool! Baby wipes work quick and easy for everything and when dealing with the soft, sensitive skin of children, you can also be sure that they are not going to irritate the child either.
